Sine-wave vs simulated (stepped) UPS — does it matter?

For a NAS with an active-PFC power supply, yes — pair it with a pure sine-wave UPS. Simulated / stepped-approximation output can make active-PFC supplies cut out or run rough on battery, which defeats the point. Sine-wave units cost a little more; on a NAS that is the version you want.
