Is Synology’s drive-lock real, and can I use any drive?
It is real on the models that enforce it: some newer Plus units restrict full functionality — health data, storage pools, some features — to drives on Synology’s compatibility list, which leans on their own branded drives. Older models and workarounds exist, but the trend is toward tighter locking. Our spec database flags a drive-lock column so you can filter it before you buy.
