How many drives can I lose before data loss?
It is set by the RAID level. RAID 1 or RAID 5 survive one drive; RAID 6 survives two; RAID 10 survives one per mirror. During a rebuild a large array is at its most vulnerable, which is why dual parity (RAID 6) is the norm past six drives — a second failure mid-rebuild is not rare. And none of it is a backup.
