Do I need ECC RAM?
It depends on the filesystem and how paranoid you are about silent corruption. ZFS pairs best with ECC because it trusts RAM heavily; for a Btrfs or ext4 appliance holding media, non-ECC is fine and normal. If the data is irreplaceable and you run ZFS, ECC is cheap insurance — but it is not a hard requirement for a home media server.
